• Monthly Meeting Programme 2019

    • 3rd January 2019 'The CDAA's 50th Anniversary'
      'Join our celebration'
There will be a presentation on the history of the CDAA and a Special Guest Speaker. These together with a number of other items should make it a memorable occasion.
    • 7th February 2019 'The Winter Wonders of Taurus and Gemini' by David Pugh
Our secretary David Pugh will bring to our attention the variety of deep sky objects that may be found in the constellations of Taurus and Gemini. Many of the images that he will display will be his own. He will describe the various fascinating objects in more detail than is possible in the monthly night sky presentations.
    • 7th March 2019 'Mars' by Mike Haynes
Mars is the most visited of all of the planets with numerous craft either on or orbiting the red planet as we speak. Starting with how astronomers used Mars to help define the size of the Solar System over 300 years ago, taking in extraordinary claims of canals on the planet this talk brings our knowledge up to date with findings from the dozen or so missions to the planet in the past 20 years.
    • 4th April 2019 Special Guest Speaker 'Uranus - A Story of Planetary Catastrophe' by Greg Smye-Rumsby
Our new guest speaker for April is Greg Smye-Rumsby, an astronomical artist and freelance lecturer with a particular interest in planets. His talk to CDAA "Uranus - A Story of Planetary Catastrophe" will cover the turmoil in the early history of the solar system, including the planet Uranus being flipped over on its side.
    • 2nd May 2019 'Extreme Explosions' by Mike Haynes
Despite the beauty and benign appearance of the night sky, it conceals events of the most extreme violence, most of which are fortunately too far away to do us much harm on Earth. This talk looks at the nature of these events and how the underlying science have been determined by astronomers over the past 50 or so years.
    • 6th June 2019 Special Guest Speaker 'Weather Satellites (and Space Weather) by Stewart Turner
On June 6th Guest Speaker Stewart Turner, Space Programme Manager at the Met Office, will present an illustrated talk on “Weather Satellites”. In his talk he will describe the weather satellite cover for the UK, how they are used and the leading role of british industry in satellite construction. He will also cover what he describes as “space weather” and how his team liaises with british industry and organisations such as the European Space Administration on long term strategies related to space.
    • 4th July 2019 Special Guest Speaker 'H.S.T. Deep Space Images' by Jerry Workman
Jerry is a regular Guest Speaker at our meetings and on this occasion he will display and describe a variety of images from the Hubble Space Telescope
    • 5th September 2019 'The Dark Night Sky Paradox' by Bob Leon
Bob will try to convince the audience that the night sky should be a 'blaze of light'. Assuming that he succeeds, he will then go on to explain why it isn't. The reason why the night sky is actually dark is rather suprising and unexpected.
    • 3rd October 2019 The A.G.M. followed by 'The Great Spirals of Andromeda and Trianglulum' by David Pugh
Our Secretary David Pugh will tell us all about our two nearest spiral galaxies in Andromeda and Triangulum in a fully illustrated talk. This will include a comprehensive observational history of them, where to find and how best to observe and image them, including what can be achieved with modest amateur equipment.
    • 7th November 2019 'Electronically Assisted Astronomy' by Robert Ivory
Robert was a member of the CDAA many years ago and following our 50th Anniversary celebration, he offered to give a presentation. Many of us know about the modern 'goto' telescopes on the market. What may not be so well known is the fact that some also have features such as image intensification technology. The view though such a telescope is enhanced electronically. I imagine that this and other features will be discussed.
    • 5th Decemeber 2019 'Astronomy Question Time - Ask the Panel' by CDAA Members
A selection of questions put into a 'suggestions box' during the year will be answered by a panel of our more experienced members.

In 1984 CDAA organised the first East Anglian Astronomical Convention with the assistance of Tendring District Council and guestspeakers included Patrick Moore. Today the society still attracts several guestspeakers each year to its meetings. CDAA is also keen to promote astronomy education through outreach activities in the local area.

Presentations and activities involving members of the public

Presentations to other Clubs and Societies

Some of our society's equipment has been provided by Lottery Funding. We endevour to give presentations and arrange activities that involve members of the general public outside of our normal CDAA club meetings. It is intended that we offer entertainment and education to the community as a whole.
