    • 5th January 2017 'The Brian Cottis Memorial Lecture'
      'The Cassini - Huygens Mission to Saturn' by Mike Haynes
      In this special Memorial Lecture where Brian would have endorsed the subject being given at a 'basic' level, Mike will present a summary of the Cassini - Huygens Mission to Saturn. He will detail to mission goal, achievements and results
    • 1st February 2018 'An Introduction to Deep Sky Object Observing' by David Pugh
      In David's presentation he will provide an introduction to observing Deep Sky Objects. He will be explaining the various types of extended Deep Sky Objects such as star clusters, nebulae and galaxies, how to observe and image them and how to find some of the easier ones. To be included will be Messier and his famous objects catalogue. This talk is considered to be suitable for beginners and of general interest.

    • 5th April 'A Tale of Two Observatories' by Special Guest Speaker Nik Szymanek
      An incorrect guess concerning the contents of this presentation meant that the description given was entirely wrong. In fact Nik moved house and had to relocate his observatory to the new address. This somewhat involved process was the subject of his talk. Of couse, he included examples of images taken before and after the move.
    • 3rd May 2018 'Journey to the Centre of the Galaxy Part I' by David Pugh
      Our Secretary David Pugh will give the first of a two part illustrated talk "Journey to the Centre of the Galaxy". He will take us on hopefully a fascinating 27,000 light year journey primarily through his own photographs taken using an Astrotrac tracking mount that he will demonstrate. It will be topical as some of the objects on view can be seen from Clacton this summer from a good southern horizon.
    • 7th June 2018 'Journey to the Centre of the Galaxy Part II' by David Pugh
      Our Secretary David Pugh will complete the second part of his illustrated talk "Journey to the Centre of the Galaxy". He will take us surprisingly close to the galactic centre with his own images before using the latest mainly infra-red and radio images from professional and orbiting observatories to home in on the super-massive black hole believed to lurk at the very heart of our galaxy.
    • 5th July 2018 'Hubble Space Telescope Planetary Images' by Special Guest Speaker Jerry Workman
      As the title suggests, our Special Guest Speaker Jerry Workman, will be presenting HST images of the planets of the Solar System. It should be an interesting and informative talk.
    • 6th September 2018 'Big Bang - The First Three Minutes' by Bob Leon
      Bob intends to discuss the first three minutes of the BIg Bang and the early stages in its evolution that have been defined. From 'first principles' he hopes to show that the proprortions of Hydrogen to Helium that the theory predicts, agree with measurements taken.
    • 4th October 2018 'The A.G.M.' followed by 'The Brightest Stars Part II' by David Pugh
      Our secretary, David Pugh will complete the presentation given last year, Local Newspaper Report giving the final countdown to the brightest stars in the night sky
    • 1st November 2018 'Where is Voyager?' by Mike Haynes
      Two Voyager spacecraft were launched in 1977 to embark on a 'Tour of the Solar System'. Mike our Chairman will give an update on their current positions. Communication with at least one of them continues to this day and measurements are still being returned.
    • 6th December 2018 'Astronomy Question Time - Ask the Panel' by CDAA Members.
      In recent months a box for written questions has been provided. A panel of our more knowledgeable(?) members will try give sensible answers to a selection of those questions posed.

In 1984 CDAA organised the first East Anglian Astronomical Convention with the assistance of Tendring District Council and guestspeakers included Patrick Moore. Today the society still attracts several guestspeakers each year to its meetings. CDAA is also keen to promote astronomy education through outreach activities in the local area.

Presentations to other Clubs and Societies

Some of our society's equipment has been provided by Lottery Funding. We endevour to give presentations and arrange activities that involve members of the general public outside of our normal CDAA club meetings. It is intended that we offer entertainment and education to the community as a whole.

Mike Haynes is the Chairman of CDAA and lives in Stutton, Suffolk

David Peachey has also been a member for many years and was a Chemistry teacher
